چکیده

The kinetics of nerve differentiation were investigated during head regeneration in Hydra. In particular the cell cycle parameters of stem cells undergoing nerve commitment were determined. Head regeneration induces extensive nerve commitment localized at the regenerating tip (G. Venugopal appearance of committed nerve precursors is followed 12 hr later by the appearance of newly differentiated nerves. Under these conditions the time from the end of S phase to nerve differentiation is about 9 hr and the time from the beginning of S phase to nerve differentiation is about 18 hr. Thus nerve commitment occurs in mid-to late S phase of the stem cell precursor.

Spatial pattern of nerve differentiation in Hydra is due to a pattern of nerve commitment.

The pattern of nerve differentiation along the body column of Hydra was investigated. Nerve precursors in late S phase were labeled with [‘Hlthymidine and their distribution compared with that of newly differentiated nerves. The two distributions were found to be the same. Based on independent evidence that nerve commitment occurs in midto late S phase (G. Venugopal and C. David, 1981, Develop....

Regulation of interstitial cell differentiation in Hydra attenuata. IV. Nerve cell commitment in head regeneration is position-dependent.

In hydra, nerve cells are a differentiation product of the interstitial cell, a multipotent stem cell. Nerve cell commitment was examined during head regeneration in Hydra attenuata. Within 3 h of head removal there is a 10- to 20-fold increase in nerve cell commitment in the tissue which subsequently forms the new head. Nerve cell commitment is unaltered in the remainder of the gastric region....

The Properties of Nerve Cell Precursors in Hydra

Two signals, the head activator and an injury stimulus, control differentiation of nerve cells from uncommitted stem cells in hydra [Th. Holstein, H. C. Schaller, and C. N. David, (1986) Dm. Biol. 115, g-171. The time of action of these signals in the precursor cell cycle was determined. Methanol extracts of hydra containing 10-i’ M head activator cause nerve cell commitment in S phase of the p...

Regulation of interstitial cell differentiation in Hydra attenuata. III. Effects of I-cell and nerve cell densities.

The interstitial cell (i-cell) of hydra, a multipotent stem cell, produces two classes of differentiated cell types, nerve cells and nematocytes, throughout asexual growth. Using a new assay, the regulation of i-cell commitment to either nerve cell or nematocyte differentiation was investigated. This assay was used to determine the fractions of i-cells differentiating into nerve cells and nemat...

Nerve commitment in Hydra. I. Role of morphogenetic signals.

The kinetics of nerve commitment during head regeneration in Hydra were investigated using a newly developed assay for committed cells. Committed nerve precursors were assayed by their ability to continue nerve differentiation following explanation of small pieces of tissue. Committed nerve precursors appear at the site of regeneration within 6 hr after cutting and increase rapidly. The increas...
